i made him a cake. i was horrified to realize it was the first cake i've ever made. (i mean other than from a box when i was little, which doesn't count). though guided by a nice recipe, i had to adapt almost every ingredient to something-close-that-we-happened-to-have-in-our-bare-cupboards.
the frosting was by far the best part. kind of peanut buttery, since i didn't have the "almond or cashew butter" that was called for. a chocolate cake (though it was ultimately a bit more like gingerbread than cake) with peanut butter frosting.

we didn't have a candle.. so i made that too.
it was really a delightful affair; we were all tired, yes, but we giggled plenty... at joe's excitement for the promised dessert, at my intrepid exploration of the cupboards and subsequent dessert-like production... and at gideon's reaction to the tiniest finger-lick of frosting. he loved it, but continued to treat himself to other tastes with just the daintiest amount on the end of his finger and a slow, measured approach of it to his mouth. what a funny little man. first thing this morning i had told him he should say "happy birthday daddy!" when joe woke up and came to give him a hug. the munchkin remembered without my prompting. it sounded something like "hapadifay deedaa!"
